Ethiopian women giggle and strain in a yoga class like no other

GOROM, South Sudan, (UNHCR) The women giggle and strain as they try to follow their teacher, Naomi Swain, who is sitting in the lotus position on the red cement floor of a spartan classroom in South Sudan.

But Swain is impressed with her students, all of whom have fled violence or persecution in Ethiopia since 2004 and found shelter in Gorom Refugee Camp, near the South Sudan capital, Juba. "Their bodies are quite different. Theyre much stronger, they can hold positions for a long time as opposed to office workers" noted Swain.

The British national teaches the free yoga classes to about a dozen students, but the idea to bring her in to help the refugees at Gorom came from Sara Gottfredsen, an associate protection officer, after she and other UNHCR staff in Juba began taking classes from Swain. She uses a curriculum from Mandala House, a non-profit organization specializing in trauma rehabilitation.

Its certainly something different in the drab daily life of camp, and Gorom is believed to be the only refugee camp in South Sudan that provides such a programme. Gottfredsen said the aim was to help empower women in the camp of 1,950 Ethiopian refugees and create a space away from their daily tasks of cooking food, carrying firewood, fetching water and caring for their children.

"If they have a stronger bond with each other, they will play a bigger part in the deci-sion-making process in the camp" said Gottfredsen, who hopes to expand the pro-gramme to other camps, including those providing shelter to tens of thousands of Sudanese refugees. "Its more about their doing something for themselves and as a group of women together" she noted.

So far, the daily classes seem to be having a positive effect, though the women had never heard of yoga before they met Swain. "I feel better, Im happy when Im doing my work at home" said Ariet Okidi, a mother of three children, during one recent session. "Im relaxed" she added with a big smile.

As Swain went through the more simple yoga postures, poses, stretches and breathing exercises, a group of seven women followed her as best they could, unable to speak English and frequently laughing but always attentive.

As the session progressed, several more women arrived in the room that doubles up as a classroom for children in the camp, with chairs piled up haphazardly in one corner and a blackboard covered in the chalked scrawling of a recent lesson.

What they lacked in technique, the students made up for with their enthusiasm. "In this class we are thinking about breathing. In this class we are here now" the teacher told her students.

By the end, the women were sweating due to the intense heat in the room, but they appeared calm and serene. "People who have been through trauma, who have not been able to look after themselves, and who are vulnerable, need to reclaim their bodies" Swain explained.

"Im happy to come but my mother and father are not happy" Friday James told a UNHCR visitor. "They said that if you do yoga you cannot have children" she added, while confiding that she didnt believe a word of it. She had found something else to believe in and to help her make more of her life in exile.

Weldon's of Dublin has recently acquired a unique item of Irish silver. It was with great excitement that Mr Garrett Weldon described the new piece in detail. The piece is about 6 1/2 inches in diameter, bearing hallmarks on the back. The most striking and unique feature of the salver is the openwork border, with shamrock style designs. Grapes are also shown on the border, and cascading down the feet. It is very unusual to see the use of shamrocks in early antique Irish silver, the shamrocks make this piece a tremendously rare item. The border was cast and decorated separately, and then applied to the main body of the salver. The salver weighs 281 grams, about 9 ounces, and has good quality hallmarks; the Hibernia is almost completely intact, and the harp crowned is only missing a tiny part off the top; the maker's mark is struck twice. As is commonly seen in mid-eighteenth century silver, there is no date letter.

The piece was made by Samuel Walker who was from a famous family of silversmiths from Dublin. He had a long career, working from the late 1720s as an apprentice to John Taylor, until his death in 1769. Walker's father, Joseph Walker, was a wonderful silversmith, who was a freeman from 1690-1722, and served a period as master warden of the Company of Goldsmiths of Dublin. He was also elected to Dublin City Council in 1714. Other members of the family known to have worked in the trade are James, Thomas and Matthew, whoever we are uncertain as to their relationships to the Walker family they may have been uncles or siblings. Thomas Walker was a silversmith working in Dublin from 1714-76, a remarkably long career.

This time hedspace provided a full service event production for them, we provided the concept creation, event styling and the Power Points content used, complete with animations, the stings for the show and the big opening sequence that had 12 dancers on stage for a grand opening creating a great impact for all that were there.

Hedspace have a wealth of experience providing events to inspire and excite the audience. This event was no different, though we always out-do our last event and go that little further to create a splash of exhilaration! These events are designed to grab the audiences attention, create an uplifting mood and inspire them to engage with the company and work harder after the event has happened. Contrary to popular opinion, picking out the wedding reception venue is not the first thing to do when planning a wedding reception. The first step is to plan.

Most people book wedding venues for emotional reasons. And, that can be a recipe for disaster on show day says Chicago Wedding Producer, Glenn Schroeder.

However, with some preliminary planning, the perfect wedding venue can be chosen. And, the big day can be headache and hassle free.

It just takes a few, well thought out steps. And, Schroeder has laid out his recommendations for choosing the perfect wedding venue below:

1.Write out a list of the most important, most desired elements to have at the wedding reception.And, list the type of vendor that will be providing each item.

2.Ideally, list every guest that will be invited.

3.After listing all the desired vendors, determine all the vendor requirements. And, put all these specifications into one laundry list for later.

4.Prioritize all vendors on the list by Must Have and Can Afford and Would Like If Possible. Compile all Must Have requirements into an organized list, in order of importance.

5.Look over the guest list and see if any of the guests have special needs. And, record any special accommodations, if any, that are needed for the guests. For example, people with disabilities may need ramp or elevator access.

6.Having assembled all the vendor and guest requirements, send out RFPs Requests for Proposals - to the desired, wedding reception locales. Attach all the vendor requirements, as well as any necessities for guests with special needs, to the RFPs. In their reply, kindly ask that the venue respond with whether they can provide for all of these requirements or not.

7. Give the potential wedding venues a deadline for responding, in writing.

If the location cant accommodate whats needed for the couple to have what they want, that location gets scratched off the list. For the qualified venues, the finer points of choosing begin. And, that's the next part of the game.
