New Wakasa Chopsticks Showcases Japan's Traditional Chopstick Art


Everything Chopsticks has just added a new style of Wakasa chopsticks to their selection of special Japanese artisan chopsticks. The new chopstick is the Nasu Red layered lacquered chopsticks.

The Nasu Red Wakasa chopsticks feature bright red base layers of lacquer, followed by several alternating layers of cream and gold lacquer, finished with layers of black. The colored layers are exposed through carving and polishing, revealing their decorative contrast and beauty.

Wakasa chopsticks are an ancient form of chopstick design and manufacturing originating in the small city of Obama, Japan which sits along Wakasa Bay. The Wakasa style replicates images of the ocean seafloor viewed through the crystal clear waters of the bay.

Elegant Wakasa chopsticks have been made in Fukui prefecture, Japan since the Edo period (1603-1868). Craftsmen apply multiple layers of lacquer to each chopstick and may also incorporate small pieces of shell or mother of pearl. Frequently the lacquer coatings are carved in order to expose the layers.

Carving also determines the final shape of the chopstick. The chopstick is then polished to bring out the beauty and colors of the lacquering. These painstaking processes take several weeks to a couple months to complete. Truly every pair is a work of art.

Wakasa is becoming a rare artisan trade. In the mid 1800's there were over 300 family shops in Obama practicing this lacquer technique. Today there are just 9 shops remaining.

Suunto Ambit 2 Sapphire Voted Best Mountaineering and Skiing Watch for 2013 at HRWC

Second Spanish kidswear show kicks off at Pitti Bimbo

The 77th Pitti Bimbo will take place from 27 to 29 June at the iconic Fortezza da Basso in Florence.

An event running parallel to the prestigious Florence exhibition will add to the appeal of an attractive exhibition schedule. For the second year running, an exclusive show dedicated to Spanish kidswear will make B?boli, Barcarola, C?ndor, Desigual, Los?n, Mayoral and Pan con Chocolate the stars at the second day of Pitti Bimbo.

At 10 a.m. on Friday 28 June, six brands ? all top international names ? will take the Sala Rondino of the Fortezza da Basso exhibition centre by storm, brandishing outfits which combine talent with design, quality, comfort and fun, all in kid?s size.

The edition will showcase Summer 2014 collections, which Spanish brands have interpreted in a rich mixture of different codes: ethnic and tropical, Hippy Cool, Safari, Hawaii in the 1950s and Street Wear in vitamin colours. There are also updated preppy looks and silhouettes inspired by the Mediterranean. A rebellious, vibrant and deeply-pigmented colour palette rubs shoulders with pastel shades, turquoise and navy.

Considered the best global showcase in the sector, Pitti Bimbo confirms and ratifies the global reputation that Spanish fashion has earned for itself, offering a unique opportunity for companies to strengthen and consolidate their brand image.

Spain has a strong showing at Pitti Immagine Bimbo, and will this year have 22 kidswear exhibitors representing a total of 26 brands.

Christopher Ryan Porter Offers Tips for Summer Wedding Planning

As a comprehensive and wide-ranging event planner, Christopher Ryan Porter knows that the summer is the season of brides. While this season is often deemed perfect for lighter clothing and outdoor ceremonies, Porter notes that there are some unique planning strategies for pulling summer weddings off right. As such, Porter points to a recent article from Hampton Roads Magazines which weighs in on summer wedding planning tips.

According to Christopher Ryan Porter, one of the most important points raised by the article is the weather factor. Porter states, "Summer can be warm and sunny, but depending on the location, thunderstorms are frequent. This could put a damper on outdoor ceremonies that are ill-prepared. While many will hope that they can exchange wedding vows under the sun, brides and grooms may want to consider setting up an indoor alternative if rain is a possibility."

Following a similar sentiment, Hampton Roads Magazine encourages planners to figure out a 'Plan B.' The article states, "This is probably the most important component of all--what will you do in case it rains? It's hard to predict the weather when you're setting the date on average about a year in advance, so it is imperative to have a backup location in case of bad weather." However, with summer steadily approaching, those without backup plans may not find a venue with a proper indoor space. Christopher Ryan Porter suggests, "As a last-minute weather fix, it is easy to find tents for outdoor receptions and ceremonies that are available for rental or purchase."

Porter adds that while many brides and grooms have their photographers lined up for the wedding, it is important that they consider what impact the outdoors can have on these memorable images. As such, he encourages wedding parties to plan their photos accordingly to make sure the best natural light is available. Hampton Roads Magazine observes, "Don't take your wedding pictures at noon or too close to noon--the sun will be directly overhead and will cause unflattering shadows. With that in mind, aim to take your pictures in the morning or later in the afternoon/evening. Consult with your photographer for more lighting recommendations."

Although weather emergencies and photography scheduling are more of the important issues to address when planning a summer wedding, the article notes that planners may also want to offer conveniences to guests. For instance, bug spray, sunscreen and sunglasses are noted as all great wedding favors.

"When it comes to bugs--a common summer nuisance--it is important to also protect food. There are many eco-friendly candles that can serve as last-minute purchases to ward off mosquitoes, gnats and other pests. Through planning, I have found that investing in decorative food covers--such as those made from netted material--can be great for protecting dishes in style," Christopher Ryan Porter concludes.

This year, always taking into account the trends of Fashion, has been dealt with the theme of Architecture translated into Fashion: Fashion and Architecture! Both express ideas of personal identity, social and cultural development and the student is called upon to play a key role: he has to translate "garments to wear" inspired by the works of the most famous architects of recent times!
The Fashions Show play on two themes: The BRUTALISM and the DECONSTRUCTIVISM, always under the sign of elegance and technological research, a successful mix that characterizes the style of the Institute.
The precious and technology materials and attention to details are the essential elements for the Fashion Show of this year: Fashion is Architecture when it gives form and capture tastes and trends. The student, as a skilled architect, gives them shape and visibility.
Fashion from one side and Architecture to the other, therefore, pick up the change of the cities and it shows: one does "living" the bodies, the other "dressing" the places.

Ayurvedic facials (faciales ayurvedicos) restore the balance of the doshas in the skin of the face. During this 21 hour hands-on program, students will learn the beautiful and relaxing art of providing an Ayurvedic facial. Students will work in groups of two, giving and receiving facials. Student will learn a multi-part procedure that includes the application of oils, heat and massage to the face followed by the application of skin care therapy. This is a very popular spa therapy to support the return to one's natural beauty.

Ayurveda healing modality has been practiced for over 5,000 years. In Ayurvedic medicine (medicina Ayurveda), it is believed that health begins when an individual lives in harmony with their environment, having a profound understanding of their individual needs.

These are just a few of the "fashion industry finds" that have emerged from FashionCampNYC, a summer program for aspiring retail fashion rock stars.

On Wednesday, July 17th from 5 to 7 p.m. at LIM College (12 East 53rd Street between 5th and Madison Avenue), FashionCampNYC is hosting an open house event called "The Fresh Flavors of Fashion." Kate Walz (the designer mentioned above), as well as this year's coterie of campers will be showcasing their talents and sharing their aspirations with some of the decision-makers of New York's fashion industry. The event will also feature the latest Ben & Jerry's ice cream and yogurt flavors. "After all," says program director Gordon Josey, "even food trends change every season!"

Unlike many other summer and after-school fashion education programs, FashionCampNYC focuses on the retail end of fashion, helping young men and women (ages 12 to 18) understand how to turn their concepts into brands and ultimately into profits. "So many opportunities exist in the fashion world beyond designing," says Josey. "Digital journalism, financial management, merchandising and store design and distribution planning...those are all areas within the fashion world that require practical skills as well as a love of fashion. Our program exposes the campers to all of that...and they even get to create their own brand during the one-week program."

FashionCampNYC 2013 speakers include representatives from Coach, West Elm, Alison Brod PR, Glitter Magazine, and other senior executives from the retail fashion industry.

To celebrate their nuptials, the couple will go on a bacon-drenched honeymoon. Their journey begins with a trip to the Pigtown Historic District in Southeast Baltimore - once the bacon hub of the United States in the early 1900s, and includes a five-night adventure through Baltimore and the 12th Annual Pigtown Festival.
The San Diego County Fair, presented by Albertsons/Sav-on, is the largest annual event in San Diego County, the largest county Fair in California, and the fourth largest Fair in North America.
